Tips For Moving Into A Smaller Space & Not Getting Down About Downsizing

Rob Marchese • January 18, 2019

Whether you’re a millennial moving from the burbs into the big city, a senior moving out of the home that you’ve had all of your life into an assisted living facility, or a parent whose kids have moved out of the house and is now ready to move into a smaller space, downsizing can be hard. It can be hard emotionally with all of the different memories shared and collected at your place of residence, and difficult mentally and physically with all of the material stuff accumulated throughout the years. With the right mindset though, and a plan ready to be put into action, converting to small space living can be made much easier. Plus, many find that they enjoy the simplicity (And reduced cleaning!) of small house living over big house living!

Here are some tips for moving out of your large home of many years, moving into a smaller home, and keeping your chin up about downsizing.

If You Can Live Without It, Get Rid Of It
When you’re beginning the process of downsizing the most important question you need to ask yourself is, “Can I live without this?” If the answer is, “Yes” then that item is something that you don’t need and can either donate, throw out, or sell online or during a yard sale.

If it’s something that you don’t need, but something that hurts you to think of parting with, consider taking photos of those items that way you don’t have them with you physically, but you’ll always have something to look back on.

Invest In Smart Storage Solutions
Moving out of a bigger house and living with less space means you need to make good use of all of the space that you have. Being smart with your space means you need to be smart with your storage tools. Utilize rectangular containers over round ones since rectangular ones can hold more, keep nice looking baskets around for extra storage and as a decorative touch, use wall shelving, furniture that opens up to more storage and the space underneath your bed for additional storage.

Keeping Your Spirits Up When Downsizing
It can be stressful, saddening and intimidating when downsizing, but there are also tons of positive aspects to living small, like lower property taxes and a smaller (or no!) mortgage payment. It’s important to keep reminding yourself of the good, instead of focusing on the bad.
Here are just a few pros to downsizing:

  • You’ll be saving money!
  • There’s less to clean!
  • It’s cozier!
  • You can re-style!
  • You’ll be freeing up time!

Once Fully Moved Into A Smaller Space, Be Picky About What You Purchase
So you’re all moved into your new, smaller house. You have everything you need utility-wise, you’ve found spots for things of sentimental value, and now you’re at Target eyeing some decorative bowls and cute boots. Now is the time to remember to be picky about what you fill your new space up with.  Clutter has a lot of negative effects  and clutter becomes even more apparent and bothersome when living in a smaller space.

If You Can’t Keep It, But You Also Can’t Toss It, Store It!
Whether it’s old paperwork that you need to hold onto, clothing that is not appropriate for the current season, or holiday decorations that are taking up too much space at home, you may need to go elsewhere to find an extension of your home for storage. With an On-Demand Storage company like Zippboxx, not only will your belongings be stored in a secure, climate controlled location, but pick-up and delivery of your items comes standard! It’s super simple.

All you have to do is schedule a pick-up or delivery of your items right through your connected device. That way, when you need a specific document from your file box, or you’re ready to start setting up your  holiday decorations , or it’s time to switch out your winter wardrobe for your spring wardrobe, you can schedule a delivery of your items with just a few quick clicks.
