Having more supplies is better
When preparing to begin packing up your things, purchase more supplies (boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, tape, etc.) than you think you’ll need. It’s better to have an abundance of supplies than an insufficient amount of supplies. Just remember to hold onto your receipts so that you can return whatever supplies you don’t use!
Purge first
Save yourself the trouble of packing up stuff that you don’t really want or need by purging your unnecessary belongings. This means less work during the packing process since there will be less stuff to pack, and less clutter taking up space in your new abode.
Pack room by room
Moving is stressful enough, make things less complicated during the packing process, and during the unpacking process later on, by packing up your belongings room by room. Then label each box with the corresponding room that the items belong in. By doing this, when you’re unloading your things into your new residence, you’ll know exactly where to place the boxes as you’re bringing them into your new digs.
Pack strategically
Do not start boxing up everything in sight, pack your belongings up in a strategic manner instead. Start with packing up items that you use rarely and leave the things that you use frequently for last. This will save you time scouring boxes you already packed for that specific items you need!
Use wardrobe boxes
Instead of taking all of your clothing out of your closet, off their hangers, folding the clothes and packing them up into boxes, transfer them right into wardrobe boxes! Wardrobe boxes are super convenient because they allow you to hang your clothing up, just like they are in your closet, right inside the box. Your clothing is quick to get into the box, and quick to get into your new closet!
Heavy items belong in smaller boxes
Since smaller boxes are easier to carry, heavy items should be packed inside of them. This will make those boxes easier to carry and less prone to breaking.
Distribute weight evenly
Distribute weight evenly inside the box to make your boxes easier to carry. This will create balance inside the box making it less vulnerable to breaking or taking the person who is lifting it by surprise.
No empty spaces
If you find that you have some extra space in your boxes, fill in those gaps with packing paper, clothing or towels. This will make items within the box less likely to hit into one another and break, plus the box will be more balanced for carrying.
Put together an essentials box
Things can get chaotic when moving. Counter that by making sure that you’re all set for your first night (or two!) in your new place by packing an essentials box. This box should include a change of clothes, your toothbrush, toothpaste, any necessary medications, toilet paper, phone charger and whatever else you might need to get you by during the first couple of days/nights.
