How To Correctly Store Your Mattress When Putting It Into Storage
Mattresses do not come cheap and finding a good one can be a real struggle. It has to be the right size, firmness or softness, and support based off of your typical sleeping positions and body type. This is why, after finding a mattress that works well for you and is within your budget, it’s important to take good care of it. This goes for while you’re actively using it, and when you’re not.
If you’re someone who is planning on storing their mattress at a storage facility, there are some steps you should take first. But first, you might ask, why would someone need to store their mattress at a storage facility.
There are a wealth of reasons as to why someone would put their mattress into storage. They’re in the middle of relocating, repainting their bedroom walls or redoing their floors, moving into a college dorm that already has a mattress, having their home fumigated, etc.
Keep in mind that a mattress should last you approximately 10 years, so rest assured that yours stands the test of time with these proper mattress storage tips!
- Prepare your mattress for storage by cleaning it beforehand. The first thing you want to do leading up to putting your mattress into storage is take off the bedding. Next take out your vacuum and with the bristled nozzle part of your vacuum attached, and do a thorough vacuuming. Lastly, grab an upholstery cleaner and get busy with that to remove any stains or lingering odors. Baking soda works too if you’d rather not use a cleaner that has chemicals in it on your mattress!
- Store your mattress inside of a protective bag. A plastic mattress bag is the perfect solution for keeping your mattress clean, water free, dust free and pest free while you’re not using it. Here at Zippboxx we deliver as many mattress bags as you require right to your door, plus any other supplies that you need. All you have to do is request it through our Need Anything Extra page. It’s that simple!
- Make sure that your mattress is stored laying flat. While of course it’s okay to have your mattress vertical while moving it, it should never be placed in storage that way, even if it saves space. You want to mimic the way it lays naturally on your box spring at home. If you don’t, the springs and cushions can warp and your mattress may never feel the way it used to. Doing this makes things less space saving, but it will keep the structure of your mattress better. That’s worth it not being a space saver!
- Do not place other items on top of your mattress. Weighty boxes and other objects cause additional wear and tear (Thanks, gravity!) on the cushion of the mattress and impair the springs. This is why it’s best to keep things off of your mattress while it’s in storage.
- Air it out from time to time. When a mattress is kept in a certain place, it can develop an odor based off of the plastic, the facility, or simply develop a stale smell from lack of ventilation. Every six months or so you should air out your mattress to keep those smells from sticking with your mattress. After a few hours, seal it back up again inside of a plastic mattress bag and lay flat for further storage.
