Close Quarters: How To Share A Closet With Your Partner

Whether you’re just moving in with your partner for the first time, or downsizing from a larger place to a smaller one, figuring out how to share space with your significant other can be a challenge. If you only have one closet to work with, a challenge might even be too light of a word to use to describe the scope of the situation. Unfortunately, this is a problem that many people in relationships have to face and ultimately adapt to.

To keep friction over lack of space to a minimum, check out these tips for sharing a closet with your partner and keeping the peace.

Purge Your Things Individually

When going through the things that you both intend to store in the closet, do not do one big purge of all of your combined things. This is something that should be done to both of your things, individually. That way no one person’s things are being thinned out more than the other person’s things.

A nice way to keep things even is to come up with a specific number of things that need to be purged from each of your wardrobes. Then, after the purge, create piles for things that you’d like to donate, sell or throw away if the condition is really bad. In addition to these piles, create one more pile – a pile for your out of season clothing. Then take a look at the below tip!

Store Seasonal Items Somewhere Else

Extra space in a shared closet is basically an oxymoron. Since space does not come easy in a shared closet, don’t let any of it go to waste! Gather your clothing that is not currently seasonally appropriate and schedule a pick-up of those items with Zippboxx.

With Zippboxx, the bins and wardrobe boxes you need to store your clothing is delivered right to your door! Simply pack you stuff up and a Zippboxx storage professional will then transport your belongings over to storage.

The seasons are changing and you need your things back? Schedule a delivery of your things with just a few clicks and switch out your current wardrobe for the one you’ve been storing with Zippboxx! This frees up space in your closet, and best of all, you never need to leave the house!

Bin, Baskets & Labels

Clothing isn’t the only thing that people store in their closets. Shoes, bags, belts and other accessories are also often housed in the closet. The best course of action for storing these items is with bins and/or baskets.

Bins with tops that you can close are great for storing things that you don’t need to get to as often, or things that you’re afraid might get dusty while sitting on the upper shelf or floor of your closet.

Open baskets are ideal for items that you use regularly and need to get to in a pinch. Make the process of figuring out where your things, and your partner’s things, are easier by labeling your bins and baskets with your name and the general contents. E.g. belts, bags, ties, etc. You get it!

Respect Your Respective Areas

Now that you’ve setup what is your area and what is your significant other’s area, don’t start encroaching on their side of the closet. We understand that space is tight when sharing a closet, but you still need to respect their space and not overstep your closet bounds. This preventative measure will keep future tensions and fights from breaking out about close closet quarters.
