Nassau County and Suffolk County together make up Long Island. Located on western Long Island between the New York City borough of Queens and Suffolk County, Nassau County is the most densely populated area of Long Island. It’s also the most densely populated county and second-most populous county in New York after NYC.

The only two cities on Long Island, New York are in Nassau County. The county is also home to three towns on Long Island plus 64 villages and over 60 hamlets.

The Town of Hempstead is the largest of all towns in Nassau County, NY by far and it’s also home to the largest villages in the county. Located in southwest Nassau County, it would be the second largest city in New York after NYC if it incorporated as a city and the 18th largest in the country. It’s large enough to cover 38 Nassau County zip codes.

The Town of Hempstead is home to 22 incorporated villages and 38 hamlets. Five of these villages make this list of the 10 largest municipalities in Nassau County, but several hamlets are even larger such as Levittown (pop. 52,000), East Meadow (pop. 38,000), and Oceanside (pop. 32,000).

The Town of Hempstead is best known for its marinas, parks, and beaches. Jones Beach State Park, the most visited beach on the east coast, is located in Hempstead as well as other popular South Shore beaches like Lido Beach and Point Lookout. 2. Town of Oyster Bay

Oyster Bay is the second of towns of Nassau by population with a slightly lower household income and median home price than the next-largest Nassau town. It’s also the only one of the three towns in Nassau County that extends from the North Shore to the South Shore, giving residents access to beaches on Long Island Sound, South Oyster Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. It’s bordered by the Town of North Hempstead and the Town of Hempstead with Suffolk County to the east.

Oyster Bay is home to 18 villages and 18 hamlets. The villages are mostly small, but many hamlets are quite large like Hicksville (pop. 41,000), Syosset (pop. 19,000), Plainview (pop. 27,000), and Jericho (pop. 14,000).

4. City of Long Beach

Long Beach is the larger of the two cities in Nassau County, NY yet it ranks 4th on the list of villages, cities, and towns of Nassau County. Best known for Ocean Beach Park with a sandy beach, boardwalk, and outdoor movies, the city is located on the central area of the Long Beach Barrier Island off the South Shore.

Less than a mile wide, Long Beach is one of the most densely populated cities in New York and the country with many condos and apartments along the boardwalk and a relatively small share of detached homes.

5. City of Glen Cove

Long home to sprawling country estates and known for its affluence, Glen Cove also has a long history of attracting immigrants thanks to its agriculture and manufacturing.

6. Village of Hempstead (Town of Hempstead)

Located in one of the best towns in Nassau County by the same name, the village of Hempstead has one of the lowest median household incomes and costs of living in the county. It’s also New York’s largest and most densely populated village.

The village of Hempstead is known for Hofstra University. Although it has a reputation for its high crime rate and gang activity, this is mostly concentrated in a smaller area with many safe places to live and an affordable cost of living – for Long Island. The village’s most popular attraction for residents is Kennedy Memorial Park, a community park with regular events.

7. Village of Freeport (Town of Hempstead)

Residents appreciate that Freeport is one of just two municipalities with a municipal-owned electric utility in Nassau County which provides lower costs. Freeport is a popular gateway to Jones Beach, one of Long Island’s best beaches and one of the largest state beaches. 8. Village of Valley Stream (Town of Hempstead)

The large village of Valley Stream, located in the largest Nassau town, was recently named “the best place to live in New York” by Money magazine. It’s located right on the border with Queens, perfect for NYC commuters, with excellent access to public transportation and a number of smaller neighborhoods. One of the best Nassau County communities, it’s often praised for its art-filled sidewalk life and close-knit community where residents speak more than 60 languages.

Favorites among residents are the Arthur J. Hendrickson Park and pool complex and Valley Stream State Park, just two of several options for recreation with 105 acres of parks!

9. Village of Rockville Centre (Town of Hempstead)
