Moving Safety Tips: How To Take Care Of Yourself When Moving

Moving can be strenuous. It’s taxing on your mind trying to figure out how to get everything packed and relocated within the time frame that you have, on your emotions since you’ll be leaving a place you’ve called home & created memories in, and on your body with all of the physical labor that goes into moving. When it comes to the latter, the physical part of the moving process, it’s especially important that proper moving safety safeguards are followed.

Moving injuries are exceedingly common. From back injuries like herniated discs, pinched nerves & strains, to muscle pain like cramps, contusions & strains, to things like sprained ankles and broken fingers & toes, a lot can go wrong. Take a look at these moving safety tips to avoid (to the best of your ability) any minor or severe bodily harm during the relocation process.

Lift with your legs

We’ve all heard, “lift with your legs, not your back” before, and that is key when it comes to correct lifting technique. When lifting heavy items you want to keep your back as upright as possible and harness the strength of your legs to hoist what you’re lifting. Bend at the knees, not the waist and carry heavier items closer to your body and centered to keep your balance.

Watch those fingers

Fingers can get jammed, caught underneath heavy furniture while being put down and generally hurt very easily. That’s the problem with small, extremities! We suggest wearing protective gloves that give you extra padding and a better grip.

Wear the right shoes

Proper foot attire is essential when moving. Do not throw on a pair of flip flops or slip-on shoes, you should be wearing sneakers that support your feet and provide good traction to prevent slippage. Open-toed shoes are an accident waiting to happen to your toes or foot!

Utilize moving tools

Don’t rely entirely on yourself to get your belongings moved out of your old residence and into your new place. Use moving equipment to aid in the undertaking. Dollies, hand trucks, moving straps and glides will help take some of the pressure off of you.

Stay hydrated

Since moving is an arduous task, you need to stay hydrated during that task. Remember to take breaks as you need them as well! Stretching before you start moving is also a prudent precaution.

The most sensible way to keep yourself injury-free when moving is to let the professionals handle the heavy lifting for you. Do you need assistance moving your belongings from one household to another? Let our team of professionals at Zippboxx get your stuff from Point A to Point B.
