Donating Furniture on Long Island [2022] | Long Island Furniture Donation Pick Up and 🪑 How to Donate

Moving to a new space is a great excuse to declutter your home and get rid of some of those things that just aren’t working for you anymore. In fact, it’s almost impossible to move without having to switch out some of your older furniture or appliances that aren’t cutting it anymore or don’t make sense in your soon-to-be new home. The thing is, furniture isn’t the easiest thing to get out of your life. It’s bulky and cumbersome and bigger pieces usually require more than one person to lift.  So while you may be dreaming of an awesome new space with modern furniture, you first have to figure out how to get rid of your old furnishings. And while moving furniture in exchange for cold pizza and a couple beers may work for some of your friends or neighbors, there is something better you can do than just haul it out for bulk-pick up.  You can dispose of it by donating it! Giving away furniture on Long Island can help both you and someone else, which is a great way to reuse and recycle old furniture!

There are plenty of reasons why you may want to consider donating furniture. Maybe you enjoy helping those in need. Or, maybe you’re an advocate for reusing and recycling to help the environment. Or, maybe you just don’t want to lift all that heavy furniture and lug it down the steps. Whatever your reasons, a furniture donation charity on Long Island that will come and pick up the furniture for you makes things easy on you. Another great benefit is you can use furniture donation on Long Island as a tax write-off! You have to appraise your furniture fairly, grab a form from the charity, and file it with your taxes. Just make sure you’re charging fairly for your furniture to make it a proper write-off. This is how much a person would pay today for the item in its current condition. You can find more information on the IRS website here.

Keep in mind that we don’t take donations of furniture, but the organizations on this list do! However, if your donation is part of a move, we are here to serve you 🚚.

Not all charities accept furniture donations, and some accept small furniture but not large furniture. So, how do you know which charities will pick up your items and which ones will accept over-sized furniture, like entertainment centers? Our Long Island furniture donation guide will give you the top-rated secondhand furniture donation centers and charities on Long Island to choose from:

Big Brothers Big Sisters Long Island  – Secondhand Furniture Store on Long Island With Free Pick Up

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island (BBBSLI) opened its doors in 1977 and has spent 40 years developing and implementing mentoring programs to positively impact Long Island’s underserved youth community. They do this by providing on-site and community-based one-on-one mentoring. Mentors spend over 25,000 hours a year volunteering and many mentors have served the same mentee for over five years. BBBSLI accepts clothing and houseware donations, many which go directly to families who used their services. Some of the donations also go to SAVER Thrift Stores. The profits from these stores help fund BBBSLI’s efforts. Items accepted by BBBSLI include gently used clothes, kitchen items, small kitchen appliances, sporting goods, computers, flatscreen tvs, and more. You can view the entire list of acceptable items here. You can donate items by dropping them off at any of their bins around Long Island or you can schedule a pick-up by filling out their online form. Long Island Furniture donation pick-ups cannot be made by using the online form. Instead you should call them at (631) 234-0000.

AMVETS –  Long Island Donation Center Accepting Large Furniture

AMVETS is one of the best furniture donation centers on Long Island. They are passionate about helping veterans and selling their donations is how they fund their efforts to care for veterans. They will pick up your furniture so you don’t have to lug it down to their drop off centers. However, they do require that the donations be less than five years old. They accept exercise machines, couches, bed frames, nightstands, dressers, and more. There are many things that they won’t be able to accept, like entertainment centers, any furniture needing repair, wooden lawn furniture, sleeper sofas, metal desks, and more.  It’s always best to check with them before scheduling a pick up or drop off because they sometimes pause donations on furniture or large items if they are stocked up at their store. You can schedule a pick-up by filling out their online intake form or calling (855) 411-4650. You can also drop off items at their Long Island location Monday through Saturday 9am to 9pm or Sunday 10am to 6pm.

Salvation Army Greater New York Division – Free Furniture Donation Pick Up on Long Island

The Salvation Army is one of the most popular thrift stores on Long Island. They work with those who are struggling with various addictions. They use their donations to help those who are homeless, as well as to sell them and use the profits to fund their programs, like rehab, therapy, and more. You’ll want to make sure your donation is not too old, damaged, or no longer works, because it will be turned away. They do accept gently used functional items and even help you figure out how to value them for tax-deduction purposes here. If you have furniture, but it’s not bulky, like a couch or bed, you will have to take the donation straight to one of their drop off centers. However, if you do have bulky items, you can schedule a pick up with them. Currently, the Salvation Army has suspended pick-ups in many areas due to COVID restrictions. However, many locations are opening back up for pick-ups. You can check the status of your locations here.
